In 2003, my picture book, Soccer Beat, was published by Margaret K. McElderry Books. I had first met my editor extraordinaire at a Big Sky Montana SCBWI writer’s conference. She (and Simon & Schuster) offered me a contract for Soccer Beat after critiquing my text at the conference. From her I learned the value of the editor’s expertise in choosing an illustrator for a picture book. My editor was meticulous in her search for the best marriage of art and text for Soccer Beat. She knew what she was looking for. After months of searching, she said, “I’m going to Europe. They know soccer.” There she found Elisabeth Moseng in Oslo, Norway. How right she was.
Soccer Beat, written in rhyming text for 3-6 year olds, is an action-packed peek at a soccer match between two teams of whirling, twirling animals. Kirkus Review wrote: “Brug scores points for rhythm and rhyme in this energetic depiction of a soccer match … Back matter contains a roster of players by jersey number, so readers can identify the 22 animals pictured in Moseng’s full-bleed spreads. Number 1 on the Cheetahs: a three-toed sloth. The Rockets number 1 is a wild boar, making this a real kick for young soccer players.”
Soccer Beat by Sandra Gilbert Brug is still available from Amazon sellers and other used booksellers.
